“heavy blue blinds”

“heavy blue blinds”

“…the heavy blue blinds that shroud the nine windows because a lost Zeppelin sometimes clanks like a skeleton across the sky above us would make his home seem even more like prison”

This scene finds Jenny reflecting on the curtains that cover the many windows of the drawing room at Baldry Court. Before Chris, Kitty, and Jenny inhabited Baldry Court, Chris’s mother always kept the blinds open because she enjoyed seeing the scenery. Nowadays, the “heavy” blinds are always shut, shielding the residents of Baldry Court from the outside world. During her reflection, Jenny realizes that having the blinds drawn may make Chris feel like a prisoner in his own home. She also acknowledges that Baldry Court already seems somewhat “like a prison” to amnesiac Chris. It would be easy to imagine how disconcerted Chris must feel, knowing that this is his house yet none of it is familiar to him. It would be even more disconcerting for him to see the drawing room with the blinds shut and the room dark, as it is implied that his mother always had them open. In this quote, Baldry Court is like a “prison” because the blinds prevent Chris from seeing the outside. It could be interpreted that he feels as if he is trapped, unhappily, at Baldry Court. The darkness the blinds create in the room is symbolic of Chris’s melancholy state.
