Overview
The Return of the Solider by Rebecca West
Edited by Lyle Massoia
About the author: Rebecca West was born in London in 1892 as Cicily Isabel Fairfield. She was the youngest of three girls and her older sisters were as bright and accomplished as she was. She was involved in the women’s suffrage movement and attended protests with her sister. She had many interesting friendships and relationships with famous men, including H. G. Wells and Charlie Chaplin. West had a son, Anthony, with H. G. Wells; however, they were estranged. She was outspoken in her journalism about feminism and other social causes, which earned her many awards. She even sheltered Yugoslav refugees in the spare rooms of her manor. West reported on the Nuremberg Trials for The New Yorker. She continued to be an activist through her old age and is remembered in English literature as such (“Rebecca West”).
